I am a very lucky guy: working in neuroscience and discovering new things about the most complicated living machine, our brain, on a daily basis. I enjoy doing research and writing about it very much, and I have been positively overwhelmed by the public attention and media coverage following the publication of my book Over de kop: fascinerende vragen over het brein in The Netherlands. The interesting and lengthy discussions during book lectures have proven to me that my own fascination for brain science is shared by many. In Over de kop several issues concerning brain science were already addressed: what does a human brain look like? Why do we dream every night? Does our brain determine our sexual orientation? How does consciousness arise? Can animals think? And during the lectures I gave following the publication of Over de kop, many more interesting questions came forward. What does a brain scientist think of ‘the soul’? Did God create us or did we create God with our minds? Are science and religion mutually exclusive? Do we possess ‘free will’? Several of these issues are explored in my new book Kopstukken, which is in the book shops now! This book deals with the greater philosophical questions that issue from brain science, and with its publication I hope to be able to provide you with a new platform for discussion and reflection. Don’t forget to check out the Forum, where you can discuss brain science with me and with other visitors. If you have any additional questions, you can mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Read, think and discuss your ideas! I hope you enjoy the ride, Jeroen Geurts. |
